McAfee is a long-time player in the antivirus market. The company was founded in 1988 and is famous for its firewalls antispam solutions, file encryption and public key infrastructure. It is most well-known, however, for its anti-virus and is a major player in the market. Security suites offer complete protection against viruses and malware, and are backed up by a guarantee of $1,000,000 against identity theft.
All plans from McAfee include a full-featured malware scanner which can impede the entry of malware into a computer system, and kill or deter the viruses that have already infiltrated it. Its real-time engine blocks malware files from downloading and redirects, encrypts and reroutes data so that your online activity can’t be intercepted.
McAfee has consistently scored high during our tests in both the AV Test 0-day test as well as our malware protection test. It also scored well on our privacy tests, scoring 100 percent in all of the categories.
The interface of the suite is simple to use and simple to use. Accessing features like parental controls and identity theft protections can be an issue, though. They’re siloed into distinct menus on the dashboard. Support is also a bit difficult to obtain. There is a McAfee community forum is active, however you’ll have to pay for Techmaster Concierge to get help with more complicated issues.
The only major disappointment was that McAfee’s system scan failed to clear some junk files on our test systems. It also doesn’t provide a way to drag and drop a folder or a file into the suite for scanning, as many competitors do. This is a huge no-no for a security suite that costs this much.
